Roger Pugh

Roger started umpiring in 1971 when the captain of his college cricket team was so impressed with the cricketing ability he showed in a 10-minute pre-season net, that he asked if he’d like to umpire. After leaving college, he umpired for 27 years in the Yorkshire Council before moving onto the Yorkshire League full time in 2003.
He lists his umpiring highlights as a good number of club tours, two Yorkshire Council Championship finals, a Yorkshire League Cup Final, under-17s County Championship games, a Scarborough Festival curtain-raiser between Yorks u-19s and Durham u-19s and two Yorkshire League Umpire of the Year awards.
In addition to his on-field activities he has served on cricket league committees over many years, in positions including umpires secretary, fixture secretary and treasurer, and was an umpires training instructor for seven years.

Played village cricket in Kent and minor league cricket in Portsmouth. Highlight of playing career was with Lisbon Casuals CC in Portugal where I spent 3 years. Gave up playing cricket at 29 because I was frustrated at my lack of ability. My ambition on taking up umpiring was to be involved at a level that was higher than I was able to play.
1989 – 1990 After initial course and written exam pass, spent 2 seasons with United Services Portsmouth Cricket Club 2nd XI in Southern League 2nd XI Championship. Also umpired Sunday and midweek friendlies.
1991 – 1997 Passed oral exam and elected full member of Association of Cricket Umpires. Joined South Coast Panel of Cricket Umpires and appointed to fixtures in the Southern League (now ECB Premier League) and Hampshire League Div 1. (Feeder to SL).  Ambition achieved!!! As a member of the Royal Navy CUSA I was appointed to Royal Navy and Combined Services representative fixtures. Umpired CS v Oxford Uni (3days) at the Parks and CS v Cambridge Uni at Portsmouth along with numerous fixtures against minor county sides and first class 2nd XI sides. Appointed to CS v England U18 at Lords. It rained. Made 2 pitch inspections and called the game off at 2pm. Broke my heart.
1998 – 2001 Moved from Hampshire to Bedford via Wiltshire and had a couple of seasons as a club Umpire.
2002 – 2005 Joined Northants CUSA and appointed to fixtures in Northants ECB Premier League and County League Division 1. At the same time, as a member of the Bedfordshire CUSA appointed to (Sunday) fixtures in the Bedfordshire League. Also at this time I was appointed to matches involving Bedfordshire and Northants U15 and U17 sides, Bedfordshire Cricket Board and League Representative XIs.
2006 – Present Day Moved to Harrogate North Yorkshire and joined Yorkshire ECB Premier League Umpires panel. Currently also Umpires Secretary of the Harrogate and District Amateur Evening League and Honorary Treasurer of Knaresborough Cricket Club (Airedale and Wharfedale Senior Cricket League). Recently moved to Baildon West Yorkshire. No changes as a result of this move.

Played Local League Cricket for 33 years then due to old Football and Cricket Injuries took a step down to look after Junior’s at my own Village Club Methley. In my playing days I appeared for Church Fenton, Oulton, Altofts & Methley and on 2 occasions missed out on an appearance at Lords in the Village Competition.During my days looking after the juniors there where never any Umpires so I started doing my bit in the middle, this I thoroughly enjoyed so this was my first step on the ladder.I first started Umpiring in the Lincolnshire League and then the ECB Lincolnshire Premier, but due to the travelling decided to go Umpire in the Central Yorkshire League, which was much easier to travel to the games within the League.
In 2003 I finally became a Fully Qualified Umpire and then this is when my career started to take off. The year after I was approached about joining the Yorkshire League and I took the appointments on a part time basis, but then after a couple of years decided I wanted to make a full time Commitment. Some of the highlights of the matches I have UMPIRED are, Central Yorkshire League Cup Final, Heavy Woollen Cup Final, Yorkshire League Cup Final, 2 Yorkshire Council Finals, 2 Lords Taverners Finals plus various ECB National matches and under age County Games.I am looking forward this year’s Fixtures especially as I will be taking my first game for the MCC as allocated to me by them.

New umpire to the Yorkshire League for 2010.
I started playing cricket at King George V Grammar School in Southport, Lancashire, having learnt the basics on Southport beach as a toddler. I then played for Southport Trinity in the South-West Lancashire League as an opening batsmen, where the bowlers came straight off the morning shift from the collieries in the Wigan area-and, boy, were they mean! They made Mark Beardshall look like a pussy cat!
When I was transferred with my job to Bradford, I tried commuting back to Southport each weekend and, although I won another trophy in 1985, I decided to retire and take up umpiring at the relatively early age of 35. I had a season in the Dales Council learning the basic laws of the game ( I learnt a lot in that first season even though I had played for 25 years ), and then applied to join the Bradford League in 1986.
After serving my apprenticeship in the Bradford League, I was invited by Lancashire County Cricket Club to join their panel of umpires for County Second XI games, friendlies, representative games etc. (Recruitment of Umpires to County Second XI games was different then to what it is now.) I was on the panel from 1989 to 2000, until pressure of work and lack of available holidays for 4 day games, forced my departure from the panel.
I had continued to umpire in the Bradford League and, after completing 21 continuous years, I was made a Life Member of the Bradford League Umpires Association in 2006. During the 2009 Season, I deliberated long and hard about my future-I am involved in various other cricketing organisations, I am also a qualified scorer-but a former colleague of mine from the Bradford League gave me glowing reports about the standard of cricket that he had seen in his umpiring in the Yorkshire League. Taking all things into consideration, I applied to join the Yorkshire League Umpires Association and I look forward to an exciting season in what is now the top level of competition for recreational cricket in Yorkshire.
